Maintaining Your Status
🛡️ Maintaining Your Status
Understand the rules and conditions of your immigration documents so you remain compliant in Canada.
Know Your Immigration Document
Each application type comes with specific conditions, expiry dates, and responsibilities. Always read your document carefully and keep copies.
Respect Expiry Dates
Every permit or visa has an expiry date—you must apply for extensions before it runs out.
Apply as soon as possible.
If your passport expires first, renew it before extending your status.
If You’re a Student
Stay enrolled and actively pursue your studies.
Report changes such as switching schools or programs.
Work only within the allowed hours/conditions on your permit.
If You’re a Worker
Work only for the authorized employer(s), location, and type of job listed on your permit.
If changing jobs or employers, confirm whether a new work permit is required.
Keep within any restrictions (e.g., type of work, duration).
If You’re a Visitor
Do not study or work unless your conditions allow it.
Respect your authorized length of stay.
Apply to extend your stay if you need more time.
If You’re a Permanent Resident
Live in Canada at least 730 days in every 5-year period to keep PR status.
Carry your valid PR card when traveling.
Report address changes to IRCC.
Leaving & Re-Entering Canada
A permit lets you stay in Canada, but you may also need a valid visa or eTA to return after travel.
Always travel with your passport, permits, and supporting documents.
If You Fall Out of Status
You may be able to apply for restoration of status within 90 days (for temporary residents).
Restoration is not guaranteed and involves extra fees.
If unsure, seek our professional guidance immediately by booking a follow-up consultation with one of our RCIC's here at WayMaker.
